That is my favorite "Charlie and Lola" episode. Maddie watched it when she was three and has said that to me pretty much every day ever since. When I was stuck in Virginia getting pregnant last month, and Josh was stuck with scheduled depositions in Vegas, and Maddie had to go back to school the next day, we didn't know what to do. Until Josh had an idea. Was a cross country flight too long for a six year old to fly alone? My answer would be yes....unless that six year old is Maddie. She was determined to be brave. I packed her a backpack full of treats and drinks and toys and markers and a fully charged ipad.
She got on the flight in Washington DC with butterflies in her stomach.

While she sat on the tarmac and was up in the air I was sick to my stomach. Was she scared? Bored? Sick? Crashed?

But sure enough, she landed in Las Vegas with courage and pride. (And glasses she made on the flight, and an armful of flowers from her daddy.) She had also made new friends of everybody who sat around her.

When I found out Josh and I were having a daughter, I told Josh our number one goal as her parents needed to be to teach her self-confidence. I think this cross country flight was a great little lesson for all of us.

I stressed enough for both of us on this one!! I love her.
Maddie I am so proud of you!!! You are an independent one. I know grown women who won't fly across the country alone. Good for you.
Maddie has to be THE cutest girl ever...and smartest and most confident and most entertaining. :) Bet she was a fantastic strawberry in her school play. Her glasses rock. Josh might want to borrow them for the next Rick Harris Band gig.
You guys are awesome parents. And those glasses are a display of serious skill. I'm impressed :)
You really are such a good mom.
This makes me want to cry. What a brave girl (and brave parents)! My Haley will be taking her first plane ride this Summer (she is going with her Grandma), and it kills me to send her without wanting to hold her hand the entire way. But, I believe strong parents make strong kids (by example). Good work!
